Straight Stairlift

The standard install for Berwyn's Chicago bungalows — short rail, tight clearances, done by noon.

More than 60% of our Berwyn installs are the straight rail in the 10-to-12-foot Chicago bungalow format. The rail bolts to your stair treads (never the wall), the folding footrest and seat profile are sized for the low ceiling clearance at the top tread, and the cold-weather-rated battery keeps you moving through the next Cook County power outage. Thread-locked fasteners ship standard to resist the thermal cycle between a humid July and a -10°F January. Most South Berwyn and Komensky corridor installs wrap in under four hours.

Starting at $3,300 installed

Our Coverage Area

Stairlift Service Across Cook County

Cook County, IL

From the original bungalow blocks of South Berwyn — the corridor south of Cermak Road between Ridgeland and Harlem — to the slightly larger two-flats of North Berwyn along Oak Park Avenue, the housing stock in this city runs almost entirely to the same pre-1940 forms. The Komensky corridor around Komensky and 26th Street has some of the tightest stairwells in the city — 32-to-34-inch widths that require the slim-profile rail and a folding footrest sized to clear the newel post. The Clyde and Ridgeland avenues blocks, by contrast, have a slightly wider Victorian-era variant from before the bungalow standard took over, with full-height ceilings and 14-foot stairs that install in three hours flat.

We also staff dedicated coverage for Riverside, Cicero, North Riverside, Stickney, and Forest Park — the full inner west corridor from the Des Plaines River to the city limits. If you're in any of those communities, the same Berwyn-area installer serves your address, same 24-hour response window, no extra mileage.

1923 South Berwyn bungalow — slim-profile rail on original fir treads, low ceiling clearance solved

South Berwyn, IL Installed March 2026

A 1923 Chicago bungalow on a block south of Cermak Road that hasn't changed in 40 years — original old-growth fir treads, a 6-foot-7-inch ceiling at the top step, and a tight newel post that leaves 32 inches of clear width. Mrs. Kowalski's daughter in Oak Park had been asking her to move for two years. She wasn't leaving. We specified the slim-profile rail, pre-drilled pilots sized to protect the fir from splitting, and sized the folding footrest to clear the ceiling by two inches when parked at the top. The chair folds flush against the wall at the landing — four of the five neighbors who've come by to check on Mrs. Kowalski since March have walked past it without noticing.

North Berwyn two-flat — curved rail through 90° landing in a converted upper unit

North Berwyn, IL Installed February 2026

A two-flat on Oak Park Avenue where the upper unit owners had enclosed the side entry and created an interior staircase with an unexpected 90° turn at the midpoint — a conversion common in the North Berwyn stock from the 1940s. Two companies told the Nowaks they'd need two separate straight lifts with a walking transfer at the landing. Mr. Nowak has a below-knee amputation and a prosthetic — standing at a mid-landing to transfer between lifts was exactly the scenario his physical therapist said to avoid. We laser-scanned the full run, fabricated a single curved rail that carries him from the lower entry through the turn to the upper landing in one continuous ride, and installed in a single afternoon after the rail arrived from fabrication.

Komensky corridor bungalow — swivel-exit seat for a safer top-landing step-off

Komensky, IL Installed January 2026

A 1928 bungalow in the Komensky corridor with 12 carpeted treads and a newel post at the bottom that left exactly 31 inches of clear rail width. Mrs. Hernandez's primary concern wasn't the ride up — it was stepping off at the top, where she'd caught her foot on the top tread twice in the past year. We installed the swivel-exit seat, which rotates 90° at the upper landing so she stands on the hallway floor rather than the top step. The rail anchors through the carpet and pad into the subfloor with lag bolts — no carpet removal. Consulted in Spanish at her request. Her son was on speakerphone from Pilsen for the full installation.

Ridgeland Avenue bungalow — weather-sealed outdoor rail on raised front entry steps

Ridgeland, IL Installed December 2025

A Ridgeland Avenue bungalow with eight raised front entry steps — the kind that look manageable in September and become a genuine ice hazard from November through March when road-salt spray and freeze-thaw cycles coat the limestone in a glaze. Mr. Wojciechowski is a Korea-era veteran who qualified for the VA HISA grant through the Hines VA. We prefilled VA Form 10-0103, routed the prescription through his Hines VA provider, and received authorization in five weeks. The outdoor rail is anchored into the original limestone steps with stainless wedge bolts, the motor housing is IP55 weather-sealed, and the batteries are cold-rated to -10°F. It ran through its first Cook County winter — polar vortex, ice storms, a January where the high was 4°F — without a single service call.

Berwyn Heights gut-rehab — low-profile rail on renovated open-tread staircase

Berwyn Heights, IL Installed November 2025

A Berwyn Heights bungalow that had been fully gut-rehabbed in 2019 — open-tread floating staircase in white oak, steel cable rail, the kind of renovation that makes a standard stairlift look out of place. The Patel family's father was recovering from a hip replacement and the architect-designed stairs were suddenly a problem. We specified the slim low-profile rail and a neutral linen upholstery that read as furniture rather than medical equipment, mounted so the chair powers flush against the lower wall when not in use. The Patels' designer came by for the walkthrough and said she would have specified it herself if she'd known stairlifts came this way.

Platform Lift

Clyde Avenue bungalow — indoor vertical platform lift for a wheelchair user, Medicaid funded

Clyde, IL Installed October 2025

A Clyde Avenue bungalow where the son — a power wheelchair user since a 2019 spinal cord injury — had been living entirely on the ground floor for five years because the bungalow staircase was six inches too narrow for his chair. The family explored platform lifts from three vendors before calling us. The Community Care Program through Illinois Department on Aging covered the install after an in-home IDHS-DRS assessment; we coordinated with the caseworker directly and provided the modification justification letter. The vertical platform lift sits in the corner of the stairwell, rises six feet to the upper level, and includes interlocked safety gates and non-slip platform surface. On installation day, the son toured the upstairs of his childhood home for the first time in five years.

Common Questions

Everything Berwyn Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift cost in Berwyn right now?

Straight rails in a standard Berwyn bungalow run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. The 10-to-12-foot Chicago bungalow staircase is one of the most common installs we do — short rail, tight newel post clearance, low ceiling at the top tread, all factored into the quote upfront. Curved rails for two-flat units with L-shaped layouts or split landings run $9,000 to $15,000, because the rail is custom-fabricated to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for raised bungalow entries and side porches run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-rated battery backup, and the first service visit.

Are prices the same in Berwyn as in Oak Park or Cicero?

Equipment costs are identical across the inner west corridor. The bungalow-specific clearance adjustments — slim-profile rail, low-height folding footrest, compensating mounts for settled floors — are part of our standard Berwyn install protocol, not line-item surcharges. The one scenario that can add labor cost is a pre-1940 home with an original 60-amp electrical service that needs a new dedicated 20-amp circuit for the lift — rare, but when it happens, we tell you before the quote, not after. No surprise fees.

Do you charge extra for bungalow-specific rail adjustments?

No. The slim-profile rail, low-clearance folding footrest, and compensating mounts for settled bungalow floors are included in the standard Berwyn quote. We've done this floor plan more than 60 times. The adjustments are built into our pricing, not added after the fact. The only thing that changes the quote is your actual staircase measurement — which we take with a laser on the first visit.

Is there a discount if I'm on Illinois Medicaid or using a VA grant?

The HISA grant and Illinois Medicaid waiver programs pay us directly at our standard quoted rate — there's no discount to ask for. What changes is your out-of-pocket cost: VA HISA covers up to $8,150 (often the full cost of a straight bungalow install), and the Community Care Program can cover the full cost for qualifying residents 60+. We prepare the paperwork at no charge. If you finance the difference, monthly plans start at $79 and are adjustable based on what your grant covers.

A word from Luis

Berwyn is the bungalow capital of the inner west suburbs — nearly every block between Cermak Road and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks is lined with 1920s Chicago bungalows. They're compact, well-built, and almost always have the same problem: a 10-to-12-foot staircase with a tight newel post at the bottom, a ceiling clearance under seven feet at the top step, and original hardwood risers the homeowner has refinished twice and does not want touched. I've installed in more than 60 of them. I know the floor plans before I park the van.

My promise: on-site within 24 hours anywhere between Riverside and Cicero, a written quote honored for 30 days, cold-weather-rated battery backup built into every install, and HSP or Community Care Program paperwork started before I leave. The Hines VA Hospital is 12 minutes east on I-290 — I know their HISA coordinators by name and prefill VA Form 10-0103 on the first visit. Hablamos español.
