Located in southern Hillsborough County on Tampa Bay about 17 miles south of downtown Tampa, the community was built on former mangrove and low-elevation land reclaimed for development.

Apollo Beach got its start in 1958 as a planned waterfront community, and the roughly 55 miles of canals cut through it since then still front a large share of the single-family homes here — most residents didn't just buy a house, they bought a boat slip out back. The neighborhood sits on land that used to be mangrove and low-lying shoreline along Tampa Bay before it was filled and developed, which is why so many streets here run two-story homes with a full staircase between the ground level and the main living space, rather than the single-story ranch layout you'd find further inland. That's the stair run we're usually working with when we fit a stairlift in this part of Hillsborough County.

Stairlift Service Across Hillsborough County
From the two-story waterfront homes in MiraBay — where 16-foot foyer staircases and tile-on-concrete treads are the norm — to the Mediterranean-style villas in Andalucia with their curved staircases and landing turns, from the 1990s Florida-style two-stories in Covington Park to the newer construction in Waterset with open-concept upper landings, our team has mapped every major floor plan in Apollo Beach. We know which Symphony Isles homes have the canal-facing rear entries that need marine-grade outdoor rails, which Mirabella floor plans have the narrow stairwells that only fit compact-profile seats, which Harbour Isles lakefront homes have the elevated entries, and which Sun City Center retirees next door qualify for SMMC-LTC waivers.

Hear It From Your Apollo Beach Neighbors
The kinds of staircases and installs we see across Apollo Beach's older and newer homes alike. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows and dots below.
I slept in the downstairs den for five months because the oak stairs in our MiraBay home felt too risky after knee surgery. Luis bolted a straight rail into the treads in three hours and sealed the housings against the Tampa Bay salt air. I was back in my own bedroom that night. Should have called in January.
Our Andalucia villa has a 90-degree curve at the upper landing with wrought-iron banisters. Luis matched the rail finish to the ironwork in dark bronze and the SMMC-LTC waiver covered the entire curved-rail installation. Nobody who visits our home has noticed the lift unless we point it out at the top.
Two companies said a lift wouldn't fit on the narrow stone-tile stairs of our older Covington Park cottage with the sideboard at the bottom. Luis brought the compact rail and the brown seat parks right next to the cabinet. Three inches to spare. My mother rides it three times a day and the housings are sealed against Hillsborough humidity.
My father fell on the rain-slicked flagstone canal steps of his Symphony Isles home during a summer thunderstorm. Luis installed an outdoor IP55 rail with marine-grade coating. The battery backup kept it running through two days without power after a November storm. That is the detail that matters when you live one canal in from Tampa Bay.
Our Waterset home has an open floor plan and I worried the stairlift would be an eyesore from the living room. Luis matched the brown seat to our carpet tones and bolted through the carpet into the wood beneath. The folded chair sits flush at the upper landing. My father-in-law uses it four times a day after his stroke.
I use a power wheelchair after a MacDill service injury and cannot transfer to a seated lift. Luis installed an inclined platform lift in my Mirabella home with the yellow safety edges and a 600-pound capacity. He handled the entire HISA paperwork through the Haley VA Hospital on Bruce B. Downs. The $6,800 grant covered most of the cost.

Everything Apollo Beach Homeowners Actually Ask
Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding, no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.
What does a stairlift cost for a canal-front home in Apollo Beach?
Most of the two-story waterfront homes here have one straight flight between the ground floor and the main living level, which keeps the rail simple and the price on the lower end of the national range. A staircase with a landing or a turn — more common on some of the older streets than on the newer canal lots — needs a curved rail custom-built to that exact bend, which costs more. We give a firm number after seeing photos or walking the stairs, not off a phone call.
Does Apollo Beach's affordability band mean higher pricing?
No — the price is set by the stairway, not the ZIP code. Apollo Beach does sit in a premium affordability band with 83.8% homeownership, and in practice that means more homeowners here pay out of pocket rather than financing, but the quote itself matches what we'd give a comparable staircase anywhere else in Hillsborough County.
Can a reconditioned unit save money here?
For a straight flight — which covers most of the two-story canal homes in Apollo Beach — a reconditioned stairlift can bring the price down and still hold up fine. It's a harder match for a curved staircase, since a used curved rail rarely fits a different home's exact bend.
How long does a stairlift install take on an Apollo Beach home?
A straight rail on one of the standard two-story canal homes here is usually a half-day job, start to finish. Homes that have had additions or stair modifications since the community's 1958 start can take longer if we're working around a non-standard stair width.
Will putting in a stairlift damage my stairs?
No. The rail anchors into the treads themselves, not the drywall or the stair stringers, and it comes back out later without structural damage. Worth knowing here specifically, since a lot of Apollo Beach's staircases are part of an elevated waterfront floor plan rather than an afterthought — we're not drilling into anything that wasn't built to carry weight.
Can you install on a curved staircase near the water?
Yes. It's less common on the newer canal-lot streets, which mostly run straight flights, but some of the original 1958-era construction and the occasional remodel has a turn partway up. We measure and custom-build the curved rail for that one staircase, so plan on a longer lead time than a straight-rail job.
Does Florida Medicaid cover a stairlift for Apollo Beach seniors?
It can, through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program (SMMC LTC), which lists "Home Accessibility Adaptation" as a required minimum service. Florida's official DOEA and AHCA pages don't name "stairlift" specifically — approval comes down to your LTC plan's care manager deciding it's medically necessary for your case, with no fixed dollar cap once it's approved.
Do VA benefits cover a stairlift here?
Not through the HISA grant. The VA's own prosthetics program lists "stair glides" as excluded, removable equipment under HISA, even though HISA still covers up to $6,800 for service-connected veterans or $2,000 for non-service-connected veterans on qualifying structural work. A stairlift itself has to go through VA Prosthetics instead, where it can be covered with no set dollar cap if a doctor prescribes it medically.
Is there a local agency that can point Apollo Beach residents toward help?
The Senior Connection Center, the Area Agency on Aging for Planning and Service Area 6 (Hillsborough, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Polk counties), is based at 8928 Brittany Way in Tampa and takes calls at 1-800-963-5337. They don't fund home modifications directly, but they can walk you through SMMC LTC eligibility and other Older Americans Act services that might apply.

I've worked enough Apollo Beach canal streets to know the two-story layout by heart — storage or garage space at ground level, the living space and bedrooms a full flight up, on block after block. The median age out here is 44.8, younger than a lot of towns I install in, so the call doesn't always come from the homeowner themselves — it's often an adult son or daughter planning ahead, or someone whose knees just gave out on the flight up from the dock level. Big Bend Power Station sitting across the bay is honestly one of the easier landmarks people use to give me directions to their street.
