Stairlift Service Across Story County

Story County, IA

From the 1880s–1930s foursquares and craftsman bungalows of Old Town — where steep stairwells with original woodwork and landing turns are the most common install configuration — to the hilly, wooded lots of College Heights and Ridgewood with their mid-landing turns and exterior grade changes, our team has mapped every staircase pattern in Story County. Somerset’s post-1990 colonials offer wide stairs and fast installs. North Ames brings 1950s–1970s ranch step-downs and split-level dens. We also serve Gilbert, Nevada, Huxley, and Kelley without travel fees.

1918 Old Town foursquare — straight rail on original hardwood treads

Old Town, IA Installed March 2026

A 1918 American Foursquare on Clark Avenue in Old Town with original hardwood treads and an oak banister the homeowner bought the house for in 1982. Luis measured every tread with a laser, showed Mrs. Andersen the load calculations, bolted the straight rail into the dark hardwood treads only, and matched the rail finish to her original oak. The beige seat sits unfolded at the bottom of the open-tread staircase, warm and residential.

1915 College Heights bungalow — curved rail through hillside landing turn

College Heights, IA Installed February 2026

A 1915 bungalow in College Heights on the hilly, wooded terrain south of campus. The Petersens’ staircase has a 90° turn at the upper landing where the original builder followed the slope of the lot. Luis digitally scanned the full run, fabricated a single curved rail that threads past the original newel post, and installed a swivel-exit seat at the top so Mrs. Petersen steps off onto the hallway floor. The brown-upholstered seat parks at the upper landing beside framed art on the wall.

North Ames ranch — compact rail for den step-down

North Ames, IA Installed January 2026

A 1963 ranch in North Ames with six steps down to a split-level den — the same layout on every other block north of 13th Street. Luis fitted a straight rail on the den steps next to a wooden cabinet with a potted plant at the base. The stone-tile treads and compact, traditional feel of the space stayed intact. The folding footrest lets Mr. Halverson’s grandchildren still run down to the family room without a clearance issue.

Old Town raised porch — weather-sealed outdoor lift on stone entry steps

Old Town, IA Installed December 2025

A raised-porch home in Old Town with seven exterior stone-paved entry steps that ice over from November through March. Mrs. Rasmussen had fallen on the porch stairs during the previous winter and her daughter in Minneapolis issued an ultimatum: fix the stairs or move. Luis installed a cream-colored weather-resistant seat on an outdoor rail at the stone-paved front entry, with sealed motor housing, de-icing epoxy coating, and stainless fasteners rated for road-salt exposure. Natural daylight from the covered porch keeps the entry bright.

Somerset colonial — carpeted stairs with pre-surgery timeline install

Somerset, IA Installed October 2025

A 2002 colonial in Somerset with wide carpeted stairs and every bedroom on the second floor. Mr. Nguyen had knee replacement surgery scheduled at Mary Greeley Medical Center and wanted the lift working before he came home. Luis assessed on Monday, installed on Wednesday. The brown-upholstered seat matches the carpet tones on the carpeted treads, and the rail runs straight from the tiled foyer floor up to the landing. The slim profile disappears against the wall — their adult children visiting from Chicago didn’t notice it until Mr. Nguyen rode it upstairs during dinner.

Platform Lift

Ridgewood split-level — indoor wheelchair platform for full-time chair user

Ridgewood, IA Installed September 2025

A 1955 split-level in Ridgewood built on one of the wooded hillside lots south of campus. Dr. Chen uses a power wheelchair and cannot transfer to a seated stairlift. Luis installed an inclined wheelchair platform lift in the indoor stairway — a flat black anti-slip platform with yellow high-visibility safety edges and a white handrail. The orange-toned walls of the stairway frame the unit, and a window lets in natural light. Dr. Chen rolls onto the platform independently, rides between levels, and accesses his second-floor study every morning without assistance.

Common Questions

Everything Ames Homeowners Actually Ask

Straight answers about cost, installation, and funding — no sales fluff. Browse by topic or call us if you have a question that isn't here.

What does a stairlift actually cost in Ames right now?

Straight rails in standard Ames homes — the Somerset colonials, the North Ames ranches, the post-2000 two-stories along South Duff — run $2,800 to $5,500 installed. Curved rails, which you’ll need for most Old Town foursquares with landing turns and College Heights bungalows on hilly lots, run $9,000 to $15,000 because the rail is manufactured to your exact staircase geometry. Outdoor weather-sealed models for raised porches and exterior steps run $4,000 to $7,500. Every quote is written, honored for 30 days, and includes installation, rail, seat, cold-weather battery backup with 72-hour extended capacity, and the first service visit.

Are prices different in Ames than in Des Moines or Cedar Rapids?

Equipment prices are the same across Iowa — we don’t inflate quotes for any address. What varies slightly is install labor for unusual conditions: the steep, narrow stairwells in Old Town homes, landing turns in College Heights bungalows on hilly lots, and the cold-weather battery and 72-hour backup upgrades that are standard on every central Iowa install. We itemize everything upfront on the written quote. No travel surcharges anywhere in Story County.

Does the cold-weather battery cost extra?

No. The LiFePO4 battery certified to -20°F and the 72-hour extended backup capacity are standard on every Story County install, included in the quoted price. Ames hit -25°F during the 2019 polar vortex and the 2020 derecho knocked out power for days across central Iowa. A standard lithium battery that quits at 15°F is not an option here. Neither is a backup rated for 8 hours when outages last 72.

I’m a retired ISU professor on a fixed income. Any options?

Yes — three lending partners with 0% APR for qualified buyers and low fixed-rate plans from $79/month. Application is a soft credit pull (no hit to your score), takes about 4 minutes, and approval is usually instant. Many Ames families combine financing with the IRS medical deduction (Schedule A, if your physician writes a recommendation letter — we provide the template). If you’re 65+, the Iowa Elderly Waiver may cover the full cost through Medicaid. We walk through every option during the free assessment — on paper, not a tablet screen.

A word from Luis

Most Ames families call me after a fall that finally ends the debate about the stairs — a retired professor who slipped on the hardwood treads in an Old Town foursquare, a parent in Somerset who hasn’t been upstairs since a knee replacement at Mary Greeley, a daughter in Minneapolis who found out her father has been sleeping in the recliner because the second floor felt too risky.

My job is simple: drive to your house within 24 hours, measure once, and give you a price that’s honored for 30 days. No pressure. No upsells.
